DESCRIPTION

Have you ever worked a neckline that was too tight or too loose?  Did you follow the pattern instructions for picking up button band stitches only to have it pull or sag out of shape?  Why do some patterns tell you a total number of stitches to pick up and others tell you to pick up so many stitches for so many rows?

Never fear, Nancy V will answer these and any other questions you may have about picking up stitches.  There is a simple ratio that you can figure out for yourself, based on your knitting, that will help you pick up stitches like a pro.

Working from a sample swatch (see below), we will pick up stitches along horizontal, vertical, and slanted edges.  We will measure personal stitch to row gauge and use that to calculate how many stitches should be picked up for a neat, lay-flat edge.

HOMEWORK (Required!!!!!)

Using smooth, light colored worsted or DK weight yarn, and needles appropriate for that yarn, cast on 30 stitches and knit Stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) until your swatch is at least 3 inches tall. Then work a slanted edge as follows:

Row 1 (RS): K1, SSK, k to end.

Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 9 more times.   10 sts decreased, 20 sts remain.

Bind off all sts and cut yarn.

Don't forget these...

"I'm so excited to finally find my perfect local yarn store. They carry such an amazing range of yarns, from locally sourced to small batch sheep to skein to naturally dyed. I've been twice (so far!) and I'm always greeted so nicely. It doesn't feel clique-y or snobby as some shops do. Their range is really amazing and so far I've gotten sweater yarn and yarn for 2 different shawls here. Dawn is great with color advice too. Highly reccomend!" - Google Review
"I couldn't leave this shop a high enough score. 10000/10. The instant I walked in, I was given a warm greeting and was immediately helped. I went in for sock yarn but, was overwhelmed by all the amazing local yarn. I love that they have a direct relationship with their yarn artisans. She even stayed a few minutes past closing when I was having problems picking just one skein. Never felt rushed or like she wanted me gone. She took the time to make sure I was getting exactly the righ.t product and even put my skein into a cake That's an amazing service that I've never been offered before. I can't say enough good things about this place. Ill definitely be making the trip there more often!" - Google Review
